Edinburgh city councillors have thrown out a restaurant’s last ditch plea to keep its hardwood decking installed without planning permission on a World Heritage Site.

The owner of La Piazza in Shandwick Place had spent £5,000 on the decking (TTJ January 24/31), which planning officers described as an “alien” material at the location and more suitable to suburban and rural environments.

His retrospective planning application was turned down by councillors and he now faces enforcement action to remove the decking.

Boards were also used to clad the lower part of walls and trees.
