Halls, which has two outlets in Gorleston and one in Scratley, invested “substantial sums” buying 62-year-old Acle-based timber merchant Colk and said it would target other Norfolk timber businesses in the future.

Terry Hall, Hall’s group managing director, described Colk as a proud family business which fitted perfectly with plans to expand the group’s busy timber supply chain.

James Hall, Hall’s operations director, said: “This makes us more specialists in timber. We were predominantly a builders merchant supplying brick and blocks, doing a small amount of timber.”

The group will invest further in Colks, improving depot facilities and expanding the building, fencing, sheds and timber supplies available.

The Colk business will retain its name for the first year but will eventually be rebranded.

Its mill will supply a variety of machined softwood, hardwood and panel products to Halls.
