Trussform Midlands Ltd was able to provide a “half attic” solution recently when it supplied housebuilder William Tyler Developments Ltd with a range of roof trusses.

As part of a £14,000 design and manufacture package, Trussform, a Trussed Rafter Association member, supplied different sized trusses with pitches of 31º and 45º to the 19 home development in Eskrett Street in Hednesford, Staffordshire. In one building, however, the client wanted to create a maisonette along just one side of the roof

Trussform used standard Alpine software to design a set of components for creating the partial attic space that not only optimised the living area, but also offered the builders a safe working environment.

A flat girder truss was installed running parallel to the eaves, supported by the masonry of the end party walls. A series of custom-sized metal web joists were then fitted, between the girder truss and hangers, built into the blockwork of the wall which divides the roof in half. Trimmers were also provided around the stairwell.

With the addition of conventional timber decking, this gave the contractor’s carpenters a safe working platform from which to install the 14 mono-trusses, spanning to ridge height, and complete the shell for the attic flat.

The end result has been so successful that Trussform is considering adding the “half attic” option to its standard range of components.
