Writer and broadcaster Mr Brandreth, who was president of the Oxford Union, became MP for Chester between 1992-1997 and has written an acclaimed political diary of Westminster life called Breaking the Code.

He is editor at large of the Sunday Telegraph Review, a London correspondent for CBS News and presenter of LBC’s weekly arts and entertainment programme for ITN Radio. His television and radio credits include Countdown, Have I Got News for You, Just a Minute and the Motion Show.

Mr Brandreth has also co-produced three West End plays, written a show about AA Milne and scripted TV series Dear Ladies, as well as being vice-president of the National Playing Fields Association and a member of Trevor McDonald’s Better English campaign Recent books include a study of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip.

He has gained acclaim in the corporate world for his after-dinner speeches.
