A remote sensing and bar coding system to help track logs is being introduced in Guyana thanks to funding from the International Tropical Timber Organisation.
Integrating the bar coding technology into the existing log tracking system is currently taking place. Strategic implementation of bar coding is intended to help the Guyana Forestry Commission monitor forestry operations and track the volume of timber harvested.
The commission monitors harvesting at 22 forest stations throughout the country.
Bar codes on logs will be scanned for validity while being transported or when they are being sold. Bar code tags are attached to logs and tree stumps after harvesting or when logs are cut up into smaller pieces.
