Guyana is restricting the export of logs in order to free up enough timber for use in the domestic market, according to media reports in the country.

The decision by the Guyana Forestry Commission has resulted in heated exchanges between exporters and authorities over an alleged lack of consultation on the move.

Bulkan Timber Works told Demerara Waves Online News that the decision would force him to lay off 300 workers and shut down lumber and value-added operations.
