Plywood boards stenciled with the caption “100% crime”, were fastened to the front of the Dutch government building, while a banner, reading “LNV, Make it happen: Ban illegal wood” was also hung from the façade.
The action was taken by the environmental lobby group to highlight, what it claims, is a persistent trade of illegal plywood by a number of Dutch timber companies.
In its Crime File: Partners in Crime report, Greenpeace claims that illegally felled wood from Papua New Guinea is continuing to make its way into the Dutch market despite promises from a number of companies to stop the use of such products.
This has led it to call on European governments to take stronger action to ensure they have “strong timber procurement policies” and “full and transparent chain of custody”.
