The environmental group’s mission is to protect rainforests where scientists from Conservation International recently discovered a “Garden of Eden” containing new species of creatures and plants.

Greenpeace is calling on timber-producing and importing countries to combat illegal logging and establish a network of protected areas around the world.

The group will host a forum in Papua with the aim of building a community network of eco-forestry enterprises. Activists have already built a Global Forest Rescue Station on the island to help landowners mark their boundaries to prevent illegal logging.

Illegal logging is estimated to cost Indonesia US$4bn in lost revenue each year.
