Greenpeace has launched a fresh campaign against alleged illegal smuggling of ramin from Sumatra to Singapore and Malaysia.

The group staged a press conference to present photos it had taken of ramin logs in boats that it says were bound for Malaysia and Singapore.

Greenpeace claims the ramin, which is protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), is then manufactured into products for export to the US, Japan and the EU. It says it tracked ramin logs to Jurong Port in Singapore.

However, the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority, which enforces CITES in Singapore, said it did not know of any illegal ramin being imported.
