Loggers in southern Oregon were held up for about seven hours while Greenpeace blocked a forest road using a shipping container with activists locked inside.

Two protestors were inside the 20ft container equipped with a video camera and laptop computer with satellite internet connection. Another activist was outside with her arm through one side and locked in a concrete box.

The three-ton container, painted with the words “Ancient Forest Protection Starts Here”, was fitted with solar panels to power the laptop, a speaker to communicate with the outside and an air vent to keep the activists cool. Videos and statements were posted on the Greenpeace USA website.

The protest, which ended with the container being dragged to the roadside, is the beginning of Greenpeace’s summer campaign to protect southern Oregon’s old-growth forests.
