The Forest Products Association of Canada (FPAC) has made a landmark commitment to protecting the country’s forests with new stringent sustainable management requirements for its members.
Member companies, which together have responsibility for more than 75% of Canada’s working forests, now have to submit their forest management practices to independent audits, with certification to one of three international standards a condition of future membership.
Avrim Lazar, FPAC president and chief executive officer, said: ‘Canada’s industry is putting its money where its mouth is to ensure that we live up to the high expectations of Canadians, customers, government and our employees in regenerating and protecting our forest resource.’
The new requirements must be implemented on all members’ woodland operations within five years.
