Environmentally responsible construction methods and materials are to play a key part in the government’s plans to create new eco-towns.

The Eco-towns Prospectus, released by Communities and Local Government, sets out plans to build enclaves of 5,000-20,000 homes that will deliver zero carbon living and promote sustainable living through design and architecture.

Renewable energy systems, including biomass, are also to play a part in eco-town developments, with schools, offices, community facilities and homes designed to be as environmentally-friendly as possible.

The government’s Housing Green Paper also laid down proposals to improve skills relating to environmentally sound, modern methods of construction, with apprenticeships, diplomas and vocational training courses highlighted as solutions to a potential skills gap.
