The launch of the government’s central point of expertise on timber procurement may now be delayed until next year.
The government had hoped to establish the centre before the end of 2003 but a spokesman for the Department of the Environment, Food & Rural Affairs said it might not start until 2004 due to a review of how best to use public funds.
The centre’s main activities will be assessing whether third party certification schemes and other independently verified evidence comply with the government’s requirements for its timber supplies. It will also provide guidance for officials and suppliers.
The Timber Trade Federation has consulted on the initiative.
