A call for the halt to the trading of British jobs for slave labour was sounded at the GMB, Britain’s General Union conference for its members in the construction, furniture, timber and allied section in Scarborough on June 9-11.

Phil Davies, GMB national secretary, said: ‘UK manufacturing is in decline and some industries are in a free fall. This is not because there is a shortage of orders or because factories are not making money but because we cannot compete with the prices of companies producing in countries such as China where workers are paid the equivalent of five cents an hour. We need to stop trading British jobs for slave labour just to save a few pence.’
