An upward trend in consumption has continued in 2011, with total volumes consumed being around 20% higher than the same period in early 2010.

China was the major driver behind the demand, while lumber imports to Japan were up 21% in the first quarter as compared to a year ago.

The biggest increase in shipments were from Sweden, Finland and Russia.

During the first two months lumber production was up in most provinces of Canada, with Ontario seeing the greatest boost (28%).
