The Ghanaian Timber and Woodworkers Union (TWU) said that it will move to block the takeover of Western Veneer and Lumber Co (WVLC) Ltd by ASD Lumber (Ghana) Ltd until it is sure workers will get “a fair deal”.

ASD Lumber has paid the second instalment in the takeover of WVLC to the Ghanaian government but TWU general-secretary Joshua Ansah said that the organisation is worried about the “irregular manner the new owners are rushing to take over the company”.

TWU, part of the Ghana Trades Union Congress, has called for a tripartite meeting to discuss the takeover and make sure its concerns about the future of the company are appeased.

“The union wish to reiterate its demand for an urgent tripartite meeting of the Divesture Implementation Committee, the Ministry of Lands, Forestry and Mines and the TWU to discuss the takeover of WVLC in accordance with secton 65 and the Labour Act 651 of 2003 to ensure a fair deal for the employees,” the TWU said in a statement.
