This was the warning from Ernest Apraku, chief executive of the Asuo Bomosadu Timbers and Sawmills (ABTS), who wants the Forestry Commission to concentrate on re-forestation rather than allocating more concessions to viable timber firms.

“Raw materials for the timber industry are becoming very scarce, because most of the major timber companies have exploited their holdings of concession,” Mr Apraku told the Ghanian Chronicle.

ABTS is embarking on a large reforestation programme.

But, he said, the country’s timber industry needed government help, particularly given the high costs of production, fuel, maintenance and exports.

He believes that, if the government can lend financial support to viable companies, it would secure their future.
