Ghana’s timber export volumes fell by nearly one-third in the first quarter, largely because of a log shortage.
Volumes were down from 90,000m³ in the first quarter of last year to 62,000m³, while the value declined from €30m to €22m this year.
Forestry Commission chief executive Afari Dartey is reported as saying that, although the volume of exports continued to fall, the unit price has improved.
The decrease in volume showed that the Commission was achieving its targets of raising export values, he said, adding that Ghana must support the timber industry in developing more valued-added processing.
