Germany’s timber industry has reported a 6% sales decline for 2009 but a strong end to the year has given it hope for increased sales this year.

The German Timber Trade Federation (GD Holz), which has 900 member companies in Germany, said sawn timber and wood-based panels prices declined by 9% and 7% respectively, though volumes were described as stable.

Wood and laminate flooring sales declined by 5.5%, while garden products rose 3%. Interior doors saw the healthiest sales – up 6.5%.

Sales last November and December were well above average.

The first polls from GD Holz’s regional events in January reveal a cautiously optimistic outlook for 2010.

Many members expect sales growth, not least because of the low base in 2009, while government stimulus measures should also help.
