The blaze affected 440,732 acres of timberland in the southeast of the state, according to the Georgia Forestry Commission.

The commission said the fire was not completely out yet but was almost contained.

Fires started on April 16 when a power line was downed.

State taxpayers are expected to meet US$11m of the firefighting costs.

Around 3,326 firefighters from 44 US states and Canada were involved in the operation.
