Timber and sheet materials importer GE Robinson & Co Ltd has acquired merchant Makerfield Timber Ltd for an undisclosed sum.

Salford-based GE Robinson said Makerfield Timber’s freehold 1.5-acre site in Wigan includes a small sawmill, warehousing, offices and three vehicles. All 20 staff of the £2m turnover business will be retained.

GE Robinson said it had been in discussions with family-owned Makerfield for several months due to the retirement of the company’s owner.

GE Robinson sales director David Catterall said the move would allow it to channel more of its products through Makerfield.

He said: “They have been a substantial customer of ours, so it is a natural progression.”

GE Robinson, which has an annual turnover of £22m, imports redwood and whitewood from Scandinavia and manufactures softwood mouldings, architectural joinery, decking systems, flooring and weatherboarding.
