The environmental organisation’s investigation has revealed that B&Q, Asda, Tesco, M&S and Wyevale are top of the league, with 100% of their garden furniture being Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified or coming from forests working towards FSC certification.

Harrods and Notcutts both failed to respond to Greenpeace enquiries, putting them bottom of the league.

The last thing consumers should have to worry about, according to Greenpeace forest campaigner Belinda Fletcher, is whether their garden furniture is fuelling the destruction of the world’s last rainforests.

“Over the past three years we have witnessed most retailers making real progress towards selling garden furniture products which carry the FSC tick tree logo,” she added.

Greenpeace has updated its online guide to buying garden furniture at www.greenpeace.org.uk/forests.
