Declarations made at the latest G8 meeting included a commitment to combine the reduction of carbon emissions from deforestation with the global promotion of sustainable forest management (SFM).

The meeting, held in L’Aquila in Italy during July, also saw support for reducing emissions from deforestation and degradation initiative – which offers financial incentives for tropical forest countries to safeguard their forests.

G8 leaders also focused on illegal logging, signalling their commitment to improve co-operation in combating the crime and the trade in illegally-harvested wood.
