Recycled and reclaimed timber are coming under the spotlight of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

The group is working on draft standards for identifying and tracing the material through chain of custody. Labelling standards also being developed will include provisions for the FSC trademark to be used on products containing up to 100% independently verified recycled and reclaimed timber material.

The FSC convened a group of technical experts from around the world last year to give input into the initiative. This followed preliminary field testing of the draft standards at a UK-based wood products manufacturer.

The draft, to include the definition of what constitutes recycled material and auditing systems required for chain of custody, will be open to consultation this month. Standards are expected to be ready for use by March or April.
