The Ciamis district in Java, which comprises 30,000ha of plantation rich in teak recently joined two districts each in March and November, bringing the total of Perhutani forest now FSC certified to 133,000ha.

Europe is one of the biggest markets for teak, where it is mainly sold as garden furniture because of its natural oils, a spokesperson for the TFT (The Forest Trust) said.

"Teak’s popularity means its sourcing sometimes comes at a high social and environmental cost. Perhutani and TFT’s members, many of them European and US furniture and houseware retailers who buy teak, are committed to addressing these impacts."
