Edinburgh-based Frontier Forestry Ltd has won the contract to fell and prune trees on a sensitive Tree Preservation Order (TPO) site with restricted access.

The trees are in and around Newbattle golf course in Midlothian and the site is being cleared to allow sewage piping to be installed.

Andrew Jenkins, managing director of Frontier Forestry, said the contract has been particularly challenging because of restrictions on movements of vehicles with the golf club grounds.

He added: “So far we have felled around 150 tonnes of timber with many of the butt-logs weighing over four tonnes each.”

Precise felling is of paramount importance as all the trees are covered by TPOs. Mr Jenkins said: “Many of the trees have to be climbed and dismantled by section because their canopies are so tight with the retained trees.”

The extracted timber is being further processed at Frontier Forestry’s yard.
