Online learning and programmes designed to create fit-for-purpose people are the future of training in the timber industry, delegates at the London Softwood Club’s training forum heard.

The forum saw Institute of Wood Science (IWSc) tutor Glenn Sharples, British Woodworking Federation chief executive Richard Lambert, Timber Trade Federation Education, Training and Careers (ETC) committee chairman Keith Fryer and Tony Traynor, who is responsible for e-learning development at wood for good, take to the floor and outline their views on training in the sector.

Entitled “Training: Who Needs It?”, the event included an outline of the current training programmes on offer from organisations such as IWSc, details of work undertaken by the Woodworking Industry Training Forum to tackle the sector’s “training crisis” and news on the latest developments by wood for good, such as the Online Learning portal.

SCA Timber Supply managing director Rob Simpson, who chaired the forum, said the sector needed to create “fit-for-purpose people”, as well as products and equipment.
