A new wood processing business is being started at UPM’s former Parkano mill site by the mill’s former local management.

The new company aims to employ as many former Parkano mill employees as possible.

UPM decided in January to relocate its further processing operations to Aureskoski, which involved the closure of Parkano.

The company has also said it had started its job-to-job programme to alleviate the impacts of recent mill closures. It will spend €1.5m to support participation in retraining and €1m support for starting up new enterprises.

Within the past three months, 310 people from 650 made unemployed have found a new job, study place or pension scheme.
