A Forestry Commission Scotland modern apprentice has been named as the Trees and Timber Learner of the Year at the Lantra Land-based Learner of the Year Awards.

Graeme Urquhart, from Inverness, is currently completing a modern apprenticeship in trees and timber with the commission, where he is employed as a forest craftsperson. He was presented with his award by minister for schools and skills Maureen Watt.

He was one of 11 young learners to be praised at the awards, with Duncan Chapman and Grant Symmers, both 15, the youngest winners in the Land-based Curriculum for Schools Learner of the Year category.

“Graeme has used the modern apprenticeship scheme to develop his intrinsic potential and is now using previously suppressed skills to help others to develop their capabilities,” said Ashley Woodhouse, the Forestry Commission’s modern apprenticeship scheme manager.
