Timber supply in the US’s Sierra Nevada could be limited following adoption of a managment plan protecting 11 million acres of forest. The industry also claims the scheme could heighten fire risks.

US Forestry Service chief Dale Boworth approved the Sierra Nevada Framework, which is designed to protect wildlife and old-growth forest and reduce the risk of fire.

The California Forestry Association said the plan failed to address the problem of overstocked timber stands and the proposed thinning levels would accelerate fire spread.
