Forest product businesses in the north-eastern US need support as part of a drive to protect forests from development pressures, a new report has recommended.

The report, compiled by the Northern Forest Land Council 10th Anniversary Forum, calls on Congress and the north-eastern states to preserve the 26 million-acre forest between New York and Maine.

It also recommends a fresh regional effort to assess the northern forest economy and develop strategies to sustain it, as well as urging federal and private agencies to continue conserving land which becomes available.

America’s northern forest is being threatened with development due to increasing land values and competitive pressure on the forest products industry from abroad. Several paper companies have already sold large tracts of forest.
