Sarawak is putting in place forest planting projects aimed at helping double the state’s timber production.

Some 38 planting licences have been issued, which would cover about 1.2 million ha. The projects could lead to a doubling of state timber production to 25 million m3 by 2020.

Existing plantation projects have focused on acacia mangium, but interest is now also being shown in planting indigenous species.

Increasing levels of plantation forest are also seen as relieving pressure on the state’s natural forests.
