A new Forest Technology Centre in New South Wales could hold the key to the future of the timber industry in Australia.

Developed by the Department of Primary Industries, the centre aims to improve growth, quality and pest resistance in hardwood plantations.

Five hundred hectares of the site have already been divided into trial plots so that work can begin on a number of species.

Barry Buffier of the Department of Primary Industries said 40 years of research was being brought into commercial reality. He added that it was important that the state’s timber industry was competitive and kept abreast of new developments.
