The creative talents of students at Hitchin School for Girls, which took the first three prizes in the Wood by Design Challenge competition for Hertfordshire schools, have been put to good use.

As well as a cheque from competition sponsor Weyerhaeuser, the school won a supply of Medite-branded MDF for its design and technology course.

Year 10 students, all aged 14, have turned the Medite MDF into a range of flat pack children’s furniture, including bookshelves, a table, chairs, toy storage and a rocking chair.

CAD and small scale models were used for the designs, and the furniture was made using a variety of hand tools, including electric routers.

The girls showed a keen eye for optimised use of materials – only around 25% of the MDF remained, much of which will be used by the school to make smaller items.
