Martin White, who works at MKM Timber in the Bridlington branch, was presented with an inscribed wooden certificate by Keith Fryer, Wood Industry Training Board member and co-director of T Brewer.
The NVQ2 training is a 12-month course with foundation work in health and safety, knowledge of products and the working environment before branching into pathways aimed at specific areas such as yard work or sales and administration.
Mr White workes predominantly in the Bridlington warehouse and has also completed training through the Builders Merchants Federation.
Timber merchanting is one of 12 timber sector NVQ2 courses developed so far by skills agency Proskills together with awarding body PiABC and a Qualifications Reform Group of industry representatives. Subjects range from merchanting to tooling technologies and wood preserving. Three are so far available as SVQs and Lisa Williamson, Proskills wood industry apprenticeship and qualifications development manager, said nine more NVQs were planned and NVQ3s were in development.
