Forest fires, thought to have been started on purpose, have so far destroyed some 1,730 acres of the Sierra de Calderona national park in the Valencia region.

Spain’s environment ministry said about 41,000ha of forest had been burned by mid-July across the country. This was 10,000ha more than last year, but comparies with a 76,000ha average during the past decade.

About 6,000 people have been evacuated from their homes because of the latest blaze in Valencia.
