The first public hearing of the London Assembly’s investigation into fire safety in tall and timber frame buildings will be held at City Hall next Tuesday.

Experts invited to discuss issues include UK Timber Frame Association chairman Geoff Arnold, London Fire Brigade commissioner Ron Dobson, RIBA architect Sam Webb, Local Authority Building Control chief executive Paul Everall and the Construction Industry Council’s Ciaran Molloy.

The Assembly’s planning and housing committee, chaired by Jenny Jones, will discuss a range of matters with the experts.

The committee will look at what the London mayor and government can do to address the issues and assess if amendments to current London-wide and national regulations are required.

Current numbers of tall and timber frame buildings in the capital will be established and forecasts for the future examined.

A webcast will be held of the meeting. Further public meetings will be held before any findings are published.

The inquiry follows two major fires on timber frame construction sites – in Camberwell in January and in Peckham last November, plus a fatal fire (non-timber frame) at Lakanal House last July.
