Sonae will start demolition of its woodchip bunkers this week following a major fire involving 1,500 tonnes of woodchip.
The blaze at the Knowlsey chipboard plant required the presence of firefighters for an entire week, with the last crews finally completing operations on Friday.
Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service met Sonae and Knowsley Council’s building control department last Friday.
“Sonae is looking to start demolition of these bunkers early next week, following a recommendation from the Fire Service and approval from the local authority,” said Mersey Fire area manager Phil Garrigan last Friday.
“The fire situation at Sonae has reduced dramatically. Out of the six bunkers involved in the fire, four have no or very little product remaining and the other two have low to moderate product that is still smouldering.
A fire station manager will be on site daily up to and including the period during which the demolition is concluded.
The fire started on June 9 and, at its height, required 12 firecrews at the scene.
Sonae Indústria’s corporate communication manager said the full extent of damage would not be known until a full assessment was carried out.
“Arrangements are being made to supply customers from existing stock and from other group companies,” he said. “Sonae Indústria (UK) Ltd will continue to communicate with all customers on the situation as it develops.”
