Sales of timber doorsets are increasing at a Shropshire builders merchant since becoming the UK’s first British Woodworking Federation (BWF) Approved Fire Door Centre.

Shropshire Building Supplies (SBS), which has branches in Leebotwood and Ludlow, says its staff are also more confident in dealing with enquiries for fire doors.

Company sales director Ian Beaver said: “Sales of complete doorsets are increasing because our staff are able to help customers see the benefits of using BWF-Certifire frames and accessories to match certificated members’ door leaves.”

He said staff can now pass on knowledge of Building Regulations – Approved Document B – to help customers make informed choices.

Doncaster-based Century Doors followed SBS this month in becoming a Fire Door Centre, while five other companies, some with multiple branches, are undergoing assessment.

The scheme, designed to boost trade knowledge of the importance of fire doorsets and relevant building regulations, is being rolled out nationally.

To become a BWF-approved Fire Door Centre, company sales and buying staff have to complete a half-day training course successfully. The course consists of a seminar and a short examination paper.
