A fire at a Pittsburgh wood column manufacturing business caused more than US$2m in damage, left at least 27 people homeless and may have put the 135-year-old company out of business.

The owner of AF Schwerd Manufacturing Co, Elmer McKenry, said he did not know whether he would rebuild the business which had been owned by his father and grandfather.

Local residents were evacuated as the blaze took hold in the early hours of April 28 and at least four homes were destroyed and two others damaged.

A national response team from the US Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms is helping with an investigation into the cause.
