The market share for wood-based thermal insulation in Finland has increased to 34%.

The material’s share in both new construction and renovation has increased annually by 3% since the start of 2008.

“The increase is significant,” said Aarne Hussila, the executive director of a market research company specialising in construction.

He said the ease of installation of one of the products, Ekovilla – which is blown mechanically – and its breathability were big plus points.

But Ekovilla Board is another growth prospect – a semi-rigid insulation board made of virgin spruce fibre by a former UPM pulp mill in Kuusankoski, southern Finland.

The product is finding a market in the log homes market, as people want thermal insulation to be of the same raw material as the house.

The fact that the boards allow the structure to breathe is also important for summer houses.

Future marketing areas for Ekovilla Board are Sweden, northern Norway, the Baltic states and the area of St Petersburg in Russia.

Ekovilla has a 65% market share of the wood-based thermal insulation market in Finland.
