Fifteen EU ministerial meetings and dozens of other events concerning forestry will be organised in Finland during the next six months.

Talks will include organising the seventh meeting of the UN Forum on Forests, scheduled for next April, negotiations on the International Tropical Timber Agreement and defining the role of forests and forestry under the Kyoto Protocol.

The implementation of the EU Commission’s Forest Action Plan for 2007-11 will also be discussed, along with future monitoring of forest health and the Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (FLEGT) regulation designed to prevent illegal timber imports.

Initital FLEGT negotiations with tropical timber-producing countries will begin during the Finnish presidency, while criteria for implementing the regulation will be prepared during the autumn.
