Red louro timber cladding has been specified for the Olympics Aquatic Centre ceiling after an extensive testing regime, with Finnforest UK to supply and fit the timbers early in 2010.

Concern was raised in a BBC London News television report last summer about the suitability and availability of FSC-certified red louro, a Brazilian hardwood specified by architect Zaha Hadid. The doubts had been expressed by a potential supplier to the project.

At the time, the Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) said various cladding timbers were being considered for the 12,000m² wave-shaped timber ceiling which sweeps outside and around the roof structure.

“Following extensive industry research FSC-certified red louro has been selected as the ceiling timber that will combine the required level of durability and visual impact,” an ODA spokesperson said.

“Specialist supplier Finnforest UK has been selected from the ODA’s Timber Supplier Panel to provide and fit the timber, which will start in early 2010.”

The ODA said the testing had been standard practice and had not been influenced by concerns about material suitability.

“It’s a positive story for the timber industry,” an ODA spokesperson told TTJ. “People were concerned that not enough timber was being used on the Olympic site but this will be one of the main architectural features in the Olympic Park and one of the most prominent TV shots.”

The steel structure Aquatics Centre will feature two 50m swimming pools and a diving pool, seating 17,500 people.
