Finnforest Leno cross-laminated timber is being used as part of the £5m redevelopment of a North London primary school.

St John & St James Primary School in Edmonton is being expanded to almost double pupil capacity to 420 and includes a new pavilion in geometric form constructed with the engineered wood product.

It is a pentagon in plan, with the top of the walls tapering inwards to receive five pitched roof petals meeting at an eccentric roof light.

Cross-laminated timber was used to achieve the cantilever to the front corner and because it could be manufactured and assembled quickly. Externally the structure is clad with variegated hexagonal shingles, while the timber is left as the internal finish.
