As part of the IOM3 family, the WTG has become a leading advocate for the sustainable use of wood and wood-based panels. By blending a rich legacy with forward-thinking approaches, the group continues to build a vibrant community of professionals dedicated to sustainability, innovation, and best practices in wood science. This anniversary is a testament to the enduring importance of wood science in fostering sustainable development and advancing material excellence.

For the 15th year anniversary celebrations, last month four past presidents of the IWSc, plus current and past WTG leadership team, joined with IOM3 colleagues to celebrate this milestone.

A series of enlightening presentations were made by Morwenna Spear (chair of the WTG), and members of the group leadership team; Dennis Jones, Martin Ansell and Andrew True, giving an insight into how wood science and technology has evolved through the IWSc and into the IOM3 era.

These were supported by IOM3 CEO, Colin Church, who in a key-note speech stressed the importance of the WTG to the Institute.

Dr Spear also presented to Jim Coulson (on retirement from the leadership team) and Gervais Sawyer (on retiring after 15 years as editor of the Institute’s International Wood Products Journal) a memento recognising their efforts.

Incidentally, Jim Coulson, Gervais Sawyer and Andrew True have each achieved 50 years IOM3/IWSc membership, as have Peter Latham and Geoff Rhodes, who were also present.

Looking ahead, next year will mark 70 years since the founding of the IWSc, a testament to its enduring legacy in advancing wood science and technology. The spirit of the IWSc continues through the work of the Wood Technology Group.
