A major review of the UK forest industries sector has been launched to help it remain a relevant and effective force.

The independent review, being co-ordinated by the Forest Industries Development Council (FIDC), will be undertaken by Alastair Macdonald, a former director-general for industry at the DTI. It is designed to explore how the sector can strengthen its representational work.

FIDC chairman Alan Bloomfield said: “Our industry is operating in an increasingly complex political environment so it is vital that we have arrangements in place that allow us to develop and promote our key messages in a way that is relevant and effective.”

Mr Macdonald, who will report back in July, said he welcomed views from companies working in the sector, particularly on whether the existing arrangements were effective and provided value for money.

An FIDC Forum meeting for the wider industry will be held to consider any emerging proposals.
