A TRADA Technology-led wood fibre recycling project has entered an industrial pilot phase in Sheffield.

A wood panel recovery vessel, more than 5m long, 2.5m in diameter and weighing eight tonnes, has been delivered to Viridor Waste Management. It can handle one tonne of MDF or two tonnes of particleboard at a time and has the potential to divert huge volumes of wood fibre, in the form of panel products, from landfill.

The laboratory phase of the EnviroFibre project, which centres on the Fibresolve process, produced “promising results”. This new phase of the project will run until the end of the year and if successful could be extended for a further six to 12 months.

The longer term aim is to build an even larger vessel and develop the system for sale in the UK and worldwide.
