Garden products manufacturer M&M Timber said it had sought out supplies of overlap fencing slats from Portugal. And the company’s managing director said he had heard rumours of slats being imported from Chile.

“I’ve been in the timber trade for 50 years and I would have thought the heat would have gone out of the market by now, but it does not appear to have,” he said. “I cannot see a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Travis Perkins also reported high demand at a time when demand is normally levelling off. It put this down to the industry still catching up from earlier this year.

“Demand is still very high in the south, but the further north you go they are seeing demand levelling off back to normal levels,” said the company.

B&Q is receiving weekly deliveries of lap fence panels, which are “selling quickly”.
