GGF, which has taken over management and development of the rating system, said extra resources were needed to cope with recent rapid growth and acceptance of the scheme in the market.

BFRC’s operations have been transferred to a new company, BFRC Ltd, along with all intellectual property, the logo, Window Energy Label, website and databases.

GGF said its management of BFRC Ltd would enable increased marketing, technical and administrative support for the rating system. It could also lead to possible integration of the scheme into the Building Regulations approvals systems operated by FENSA and other GGF divisions.

Former BFRC chairman Kevin Cubbage said the merger was good news for the UK glazing industry, while former rating scheme project manager Robin Kent described Window Energy Rating as the best opportunity for increasing sales and market growth in the sector.

The scheme was born from a British Woodworking Federation-led initiative in the late 1990s. BFRC Window Energy Ratings are now included in the new Part L as an alternative to U-values for demonstrating compliance.
