Judge Charles Breyer had previously issued a preliminary injunction to halt further logging in the 328,000-acre preserve, home to two-thirds of the world’s largest trees.

The US Forest Service has hinted at appealing the decision. It says logging of trees up to 30in in diameter is designed to protect sequoia trees from wildfires.

Conservation groups and the state attorney brought the legal action, claiming the logging plan was really designed to satisfy timber interests. They claimed the plan would have allowed up to 7.5 million board feet of timber to be cut.
